The earliest known inhabitants of the presentday town of Berezniki were the first settlements in the 16th -17th centuries, as part of the salt works opened here. However, the first people came to this hinterland as early as in the 9th century: an ancient dwelling site discovered by archeologists within the town lines roots back to the Stone Age.

Zyryanka settlement was first mentioned in 1579. A number of the settlements that later became the foundation of the future town emerged in the 17th century around salt refineries owned by the noble family of Stroganovs. The history of Berezniki was highlighted by the first in Russia soda works launched by Ivan Lyubimov, a Perm merchant, in August, 1883.

The mill was built in cooperation with the Belgian industrial chemist Solvay, famous for the discovery of ammonia-soda process being the major industrial process for the production of soda ash, also named Solvay reaction in chemistry. The Nobel Prize-winning Russian writer Boris Pasternak who visited Berezniki for official matters called the mill ‘Lyubimov, Solvay & Co.’ and the settlement around it as ‘little industrial Belgium’.

The unique Verkhnekamsky field of potassium salts, being also one of most lucrative in the world, has created favorable conditions for the origination of this big town.

Berezniki of today features high concentration of industrial potential, a number of enterprises being officially acknowledged as monopolists in the Russian market.

Berezniki is fairly enough called the cultural capital of Verkhnekamye (Upper Kama region). For almost half a century the jazz band and national school-theatre of ballet perform here, let alone two drama theatres and a number of museums, the Konovalov Museum of History and Art being the prominent one. In its collection you will find over three hundred ancient icons, the Stroganov school icon Mother of God The Mount Not Hewn with Hands with Saints Nikita and Yevpraksiya being the true gem of the collection of Old Russian tempera painting.

Worth seeing are over one hundred of relics that will give you the impression of the Old Russian and Old Believers’ copper cast plastic art. The unique collection of rare books includes hand-written and early-printed editions. The collection of wooded sculpture of the 18th -19th centuries is the pride of the art gallery.

Berezniki is also famed for its beautiful Trinity Church of the 17th century being one of the oldest stone churches in Permsky Kray, and the only operating orthodox temple - the Church of St. John the Baptist, which was erected with the financial support of the Stroganovs in 1757. This Church was closed in the 30s of the last century and disgracefully used as an industrial premise to be restituted to the believers only in 1992 and renovated afterwards.
